What is a Blog?

A blog is a website that has written articles or blog posts that are helpful to readers. Blogs, as opposed to business websites, are usually written by one or two people adding their unique perspective and expertise to the topic at hand.

What is the difference between a blog and a website?

Websites are usually owned by businesses and do not necessarily have updated posts, although many businesses are using blogging to help promote their companies.

A business website usually provides information about the business such as location, store hours, contact information. email and telephone number, pricing information and other information about the company. Yet, a blog usually has informational posts with a personal twist or list of information. Blogs can include personal stories or provide information in a unique way.

Importance of Blogs

Blogs are important for many different reasons, the main being providing knowledge and expertise to the reader. Sure many get into blogging because they want to turn it into a business and make money blogging, but if you can help people in your money-making journey then it is a win-win for both you and your reader.

You want to provide the best information on your topic and show authority and trust.

Web Log Post

Web Logs, commonly known as blogs, are just that. A log on the web. Yet, many people choose to write about their life as a log, but others choose to create informational blogs that relate to their own expertise or personal experience. Blogs are common ways to share information with a personal flair.

What should I blog about?

There are so many blogging topics. In fact, you can write a blog about anything. Although some topics will be more popular than others.

Do you like chicken coops? Write a blog about it.

Here are some of the most popular blog types are listed below:

#1 Travel Blogs

Although the travel blog industry took a hit in 2019 and 2020, things started to pick up as people wanted to get out in 2021 and 2022. Travel blogs tell about different cities, sightseeing, hotel reviews, restaurants, and so on. You could even get more specific and write only about one area or country. For example, if you have visited France several times, you could share your knowledge with people interested in traveling to France.

#2 Fashion Blogs

Fashion bloggers write about the latest trends, fashion on a budget, seasonal fashion, store sales and more. More specific fashion bloggers may write about makeup reviews and tutorials or write about store sales posting their hauls.

#3 Lifestyle Blogs

Lifestyle blogs cover a variety of topics which can include family life, recipes, advice on a variety of topics, travel, finance, frugal living, minimalism, and more. If search engine optimization is your main goal, it may be better to stick to one or two topics; however, if you want to write about all the things, you could easily do well on Pinterest with a lifestyle blog and generate an income.

#4 Food Blogs

Food blogs showcase recipes and can be very broad or very specific. For instance, you could write about only salads or you could write about only crock pot meals. However, you could also write about any recipe you please depending on how you choose to set up your food blog.

#5 Finance/Frugal living Blogs

I Heart Frugal fits into this category. Finance blogs cover topics on budgeting, investing, saving money, making money, and more.

#6 Personal Blogs

Some people choose to write about their daily lives. However, this type of blog will probably make you the least amount of money since you are not providing much value to the reader.

However, if you have a huge following already, you may be able to make this type of blog profitable. Yet, if you are just keeping an online diary and just blogging for a hobby, then this type of blog may be for you.

#7 Mommy Blogs

Mommy bloggers write about parenting tips and tricks. A specific mom blog may write only about breastfeeding. However, many mommy bloggers may cover a wide genre of parenting tips, feeding tips, behavioral tips, activities or learning.

#8 Educational Blogs

Education blogs may focus on information for a specific grade or learning. For example, an educational blog about kindergarten may provide the reader with ideas to help your kindergartener progress and create printables to aid in learning.

#9 Craft Blogs

Crafting blogs are very popular and can pick up quickly on Pinterest as this is the type of material people are often searching for on this visual platrom. If you are crafty make sure to snap some “in process” pictures and type up your directions. Videos are also a great way to get seen as a craft blogger. You can become an affiliate for craft products, furniture, and even sell your craft items.

Other Money-Making Posts

How do bloggers make money?

There are five main ways bloggers make money. You can start small if you are new and add some as you grow. The first way I started making money on my blog was affiliate marketing and then advertising.

Affiliate marketing is an easy way to start making money because it is easy to get into Amazon associates. And my first commission sale was from Amazon and my second was from Target. Advertising is also easy to set up, but I would wait to apply to Google Adsense until you have at least ten posts, because I applied with around five and was denied. Nonetheless, I was later accepted when I had more posts. It is difficult to generate and income from advertising when you start because you will need a larger number of page views to make money from blog advertising which is explained in more detail below.

Here is a list of the five ways blogs make money:

1. Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marking is recommending products you love to your readers. First, you must become an affiliate for the company and you can do this by either reaching out to the company and simply asking if they have an affiliate program, or by joining affiliate networks and applying throughout the network.

Here are some of the most popular affiliate networks:

  • CJ Affiliates – CJ, also known as commission junction, has many companies listed. This is great for a beginning blogger and easy to get into.
  • Impact Radius – Home to Target, Swell Investing, Home Depot, and many more, this is a great network to join.
  • Flex Offers – This is great for personal finance bloggers and can connect you with Mint, Personal Capital, Acorns, Macy’s, and many more.
  • Shareasale – Shareasale is a great, easy-to-use platform also great for beginning bloggers.

2. Advertising

When you start blogging and have low page views, it will be hard to make a steady income from ads. However, some money is better than no money. So after you have a few posts up on your site, apply to Google Adsense or Media.net. Both of these companies accept newer bloggers.

Then have a goal to get into one of the better ad networks that pay better. Monumetric accepts bloggers with 10,000 pageviews, but you must pay a $99 fee for setting up which comes out of your pay, unless you have 80,000 pageviews then the setup is free. Mediavine is a popular choice as well, but you must hit 50,000sessions (not pageviews) to get accepted. This is around 60,000 pageviews.

Lastly, Adthrive is popular amongst bigger bloggers but you need at least 100,000 pageviews to apply and get accepted, so it is best to go with a smaller pageview requirement when you first start out and then make it a goal to get accepted. I am currently with monomeric and love them.

Check out the ad agency I use here!

3. Sponsored posts

Sponsored posts are when a company pays you to write about them. This must be disclosed at the top of your article, but it is a great way to make some extra cash as a blogger. The great news is many companies will hire micro-bloggers that don’t have a huge following. Here are some great companies I work with that connect bloggers to brands:

Get Sponsored by Big Brands

There are many other companies out there but these are the ones I belong to and recommend.

4. Selling your own product

Creating products is simple and easy. In today’s digital world, if this is something you are interested in, you can get something up and running today. Here are some digital products that bloggers offer:

      • eBooks
      • printables (budget binder/meal planning binder)
      • classes (created on platforms such a Udemy, Teachable, and Thinkific)
      • Guides

If you are smaller, you may want to consider using Sendowl to sell your products. You pay a small fee of $9 per month and are allowed 10 products. Obviously, if you are making money and want to add more products you will pay more or you may want to consider Shopify (which costs more) or Woocomerce. However, Sendowl is great for new bloggers.

If you are not into creating products, you can actually buy PLR products with commercial use rights and sell them as you own on your blog. I have done this and it is a great way to get started as you learn to make products. My favorite PLR blogger is Becky from Mom Beach. She has so many products to choose from and makes her licensing easy. She allows you to see “as is” however, most recommend customizing your product, which doesn’t take long at all. Click here to see her products and use the code AFFILIATE25  to get 25% off your first order!

I use Sendowl to sell products on my blog and their lowest plan is $9.00 per month. You can try it free for 30 days by clicking here.

5. Product Reviews

Many companies will pay you to write a review on their site in exchange for a free product. I have personally never done this because after claiming your free products on your taxes it hardly makes it worth the money. Yet, if there is a  product you really love anyway and want to get it for free, this may be your thing. The best way to get started with this is to google the company and search for a contact representative.

Different types of blog posts and how to make money

It is important to have a variety of posts on your site to keep your readers intrigued and keep coming back. There are certain types of post that will drive traffic and make you more money as a blogger. Try to mix things up on your blog with these different types of blog posts.

The main types of blog posts are as follows:

#1 How to’s and tutorial blog posts

Many people searching for a topic online are looking for a solution to their problems. You must get in your reader’s mind and think what is it in it for them to read your blog post out of all the other millions of blog out there. Teaching your reader how to do something is the best way to gain an audience and potentially make money. For example, if you are teaching someone how to sew, you can link to the products you use including knitting needles and the best yarn. If you are comprehensive enough, your readers will keep coming back and continue to buy the products you recommend.

#2 List blog post

The human brain loves lists. If you follow me, you know I love writing lists posts. Some boggers feel “the list” has been done to death, yet your reader loves a great list. And if you are trying to make money, you can create lists that include products or gift guides.

Here is an example of a list and a gift guide from my site. 40 Gift Ideas for Men He Will Actually Like For Any Budget

#3 Interview blog post

Do you love to interview people? This is a great way to show some expertise in your field and credibility if you can book an interview that is well-known. It will also help drive traffic if this well-known expert shares your post.

Here is an example of an interview blog posts:

#4 Roundup blog post

A roundup post is a curated collection of other bloggers’ work which can include your own to help provide your reader with an ultimate list of something they are interested in. Recipe collections are a popular use of roundup posts, but can also include financial posts, travel posts or round-ups of just about anything. In this type of post you want to provide your reader with the best of the best so you are not sending them to a spammy site. You want to build trust and sending your reader to spam is not the way to do this. Also, make sure you have permission from the author to share his or her work, especially if you want to use a picture. There are Facebook groups that help find posts that people are willing to share and often bloggers love this type of exposure, especially if you are giving them a “do follow” backlink.

Your readers will love that you took the time to find them great curated information from the web and they will not have to dig through and find things themselves.

Here is an example of my most popular round-up post: 50 Cheap Meals That Will Fill Up Your Family

#5 Reviews

If you are looking to make money as a blogger, review posts are a great way to get started with affiliate marketing. If you truly love a product, why not recommend it to your reader. Here is the catch…You must only promote stuff you trust and really love, otherwise, you will lose credibility.

Here is an example of a review post: Asics Review – Best Shoe for Runners (keep in mind this wasn’t the best post idea for a personal finance blogger, but I didn’t know that when I started blogging so I de-indexed it from Google!:)

#6 Controversial Posts

Controversial post cover topics that are considered controversial. As a blogger, you are usually taking an opinion on either side. Although this may get you pageviews, you may want to consider conversations that will be started from your post. Many bloggers that are trying to earn money stay away from these types of post, yet they can still be profitable if you find the right following.

#7 Infographics

Infographics or infographics for short, are pictures that show the reader how to do something or provide information about a topic in a graphic form. This can be a list of ideas or a step-by-step process you want to teach your readers. I have even seen blog calendar ideas in an infographic form on Pinterest. Here is an example of a post I have that includes an infographic:

#8 Cheat Sheets

Cheat sheets are an easy way to help your readers accomplish something. They can provide a “how-to” but in an easier way. It is also popular to create a free printable cheat sheet to go along with the post. You can also make money using cheat sheets, but giving away a teaser cheat sheet and then charging money for the full version.

#9 Question/Answer

This type of post posses a question and then answers it. This can be a very informative way to keep readers interested.

#10 diary style

A diary-style post highlights a personal journey with day-to-day stories about life. This can be hit or miss if you are trying to make money. Most readers want to know “What’s in it for me” when searching on the internet. Yet, if you have a following that is really interested in your life or if you are documenting a medical journey, this could work for income.

#11 Podcasts

Podcast are audio versions of information. You can turn your podcasts into a website or blog, but creating a website and showcasing your podcast as well as transcribing them.

#12 Videos

Many bloggers are also vloggers or video bloggers. Video is hugely popular and can help you rank better in google. You could do an “only” video blog or a combination of writing and video. Many prefer video because it is WAY faster than creating a blog post; however, doing video can be terrifying so you will have to get over your fear of being on camera which I haven’t quite mastered yet! If you decide to use video, you can repurpose your content on YouTube and make money with advertising or affiliate links that way too.

#13 Series

Series posts are like a book with chapters. You may want to cover one subject and go into as much depth as you can. A series is a great way to do this. You will have more published content on your blog and you will give readers are a reason to come back. I did a series on meal planning and published five posts explaining how to meal plan.

Blog Series Example: How to Meal Plan Like a Pro Series

#14 Story

Tell a story to get your reader interested. This really only works if you are a good storyteller, but if you are you can grow a huge following that will come back time and time again to hear your wonderful stories.
