What is Passive Income?

Passive income is a source of earning money without having to work for it. Of course, most forms of passive income involve initial setup work, but once the initial work is done, you can set it and forget it.

I guess that is why passive income is so lucrative. You can set up a system and literally make money while you sleep.

In short, passive income means you are earning without doing any work. It is passive.

This may sound like a dream come true and coming from someone that makes passive income monthly (aka-me) I will teach you how you can do this too. To be transparent the passive income I make is from this blog, and it is not yet enough to live off of entirely, but it is getting there so blogging is one option. (I also have a few more ideas I use to make passive income and others I have not tried yet listed below.)

Moreover, how does one go about finding passive income sources and success?

It is easier than it sounds and you can start making passive income too.

17 Potential Ways to Make Passive Income in 2022

#1 Online Courses

Are you an expert in a subject? Even if you are not, you can still do the research and create an online course.

Start by setting up your course on platforms such as Udemy, Thinkific, and Teachable. The key is to have more knowledge than the audience you are trying to reach.

If you have found a solution to an everyday problem, this could be your money maker. Your class should aim at helping others solve a problem.

You can create an online course on just about anything. Since I am a blogger, I have bought many blogging courses listed on the platforms above. There are classes on Search Engine Optimization (which I didn’t even know what it was until I started blogging) and many other aspects of blogging and most of these classes really helped me.

Here are some other online courses ideas to get you started:

  • speed reading
  • cooking for beginners
  • meditation
  • journaling
  • drawing
  • painting
  • computer skills
  • starting a blog

Find something you’re good at and share it with the world. Oh, and make a passive income while teaching others.

If you are considering starting an online course or home business, Ultimate Bundles is having a huge bundle sale of training to get you started! Check out the training here and get everything you need to set up your online business: Click here to find out more!

#2 Invest in Dividend Stocks

Investing in dividend stocks is an easy way to make passive income. It requires little upfront work. You just need some cash to invest, but once you put your money in you are paid a quarterly dividend. If you have enough money invested, you can eventually live off your dividends.

An example of a dividend stock I invest in is AT&T. They pay investors a quarterly dividend, which is four times per year. Many people reinvest this dividend, but you don’t have to. You can pocket the money.

Are you new to investing? Check out this course by the Motley Fool. You can learn stocks and trading tips and get your feet wet with investing. You will realize, it is not as hard as it sounds.

If you have enough money, you could potentially live off of your dividends and this is a #incomegoal of my husband and myself. Of course, it takes money upfront to get started, but if you start while you are young and build your investments, at some point you could potentially retire early and live off of your dividend.

Here are a few ways to learn more about investing.

#3 Invest Small

Instead of going straight for the big stocks, try your hand at smaller investing apps to get your feet wet and learn the ins and outs of investing. Here are two investing apps I recommend to my readers:

Acorns

Acorns is an easy way to start investing your spare change. This app allows you to invest your spare change spent on your credit card and each time your purchase amount is rounded up and put into your account. It is an easy way to trick yourself into saving. And since it is a small amount, you can rest easy and avoid worrying about losing a bunch of money at first. You can test your knowledge of the stock market and get the hang of it, before making a huge money commitment.

M1 Finance

This is another investment app that helps you earn money through investments.

#4 Peer to Peer Loans

What is a peer to peer lending? If you don’t want to go the traditional route and borrow from a bank, qualified borrowers can borrow money directly from lenders. That is where your passive income idea comes in.

You can make interest by lending money to qualified borrowers. If you are interested in making interest on your money passively, check out the companies below to get started:

  • Supermoney
  • Remitly
  • Lending club
  • Peerfrom

#5 Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing means you are recommending a product or service and in return, you receive a commission when someone makes a purchase through your link. In order to use affiliate marketing as passive income, it helps to have a website, but it is not the only way to promote products. You can use social media or promote products to family and friends to make a commission. Here are some reputable companies I use for affiliate marketing:

Flexoffers

Awin

CJ Affiliates

Shareasale

Shopher Media

#6 Sell Digital Products

Selling digital products is easier than ever.

You just need some basic skills to make a digital product and once you have made it, it is done. Any sales you make after that are completely passive.

To make it even easier, you can buy Private Label Rights products with commercial use and customize or use as you own. So you can sell, even if you don’t know how to make digital products.

I use PRL Beach for some of my products and you can check Becky’s shop out here! She makes very professional products that you can sell as you own.

Although it does help to promote your products, you can even open your products to affiliates and let them do the promoting. Of course, you have to pay them, but you are essentially borrowing their audience so it is worth it, because if they like your products they will come back.

The easiest way to sell digital products is to open an Etsy or Teacher-pay-Teacher store, depending on what you are selling. I have a teacher-pay-teacher and an Etsy store. I also have stores on all three of my blogs.

If you have a website or social media following you can use Sendowl or Woocommerce. I use Sendowl.

Shopify also has beautiful storefronts that can be integrated into a website but will cost a bit more.

Sendowl – I currently use Sendowl and with plans starting at just $9, it is affordable to start selling your products.

Etsy – You can also add the same products mentioned above to Etsy or Teacher Pay Teacher depending on the product.

Teacher Pay Teacher – If you make educational products this is another source of passive income I recommend and use. (I used to be a teacher so this was right up my alley.)

Woocommerce – Thsi is another store-front that integrates with WordPress websites – which you will want to consider getting if you make digital products because if you sell on your own site, you keep all of the profits and do not pay listing fees like some of the other above mentions platforms.

#7 Advertising Income

This is another form of passive income I use. If you are ready to start a website, you can grow your pageviews and get into a good ad agency. See those ads at the bottom of the page and in some of my pictures? They are from a company called Monumetric. I had to get 10,000 pageviews before I could even apply, but now my ad revenue is a passive form of income I make monthly.

These are the four top ad networks bloggers use:

Monumetric

Mediavine

Adthrive

Ezoic

Ezoic is the easiest to get into, with a starter program offered. Mediavine requires 50,000 sessions and I am striving for this with my second blog and Adthrive 100,000. Monumetirc has a starter program (on pause now) that only requires 10,000 but you must pay a set-up fee of $99 that comes out of your first paycheck.

#8 Invest in Realeste

Don’t have money to buy your own house or rental? You can use Reality Yield to pool money together with other people and still make a profit.

#9 Blog

If you are interested in starting a blog and like to write, you can create your blog and start earning passive income. Starting a blog is a lot of upfront work, yet after you get everything set up, you can earn ad income without doing a thing. You can also set up digital products on your blog or recommend affiliates and earn money.

If you know what you are doing, the sky is the limit.

If you are interested in starting a blog, head over to my blog tutorial or check out my Blog by Number Course Review to get you started.

#10 Youtube Channel

Youtube is another platform that takes some initial setup, but once you have grown your channel you can make money for advertising and affiliate marketing from your past evergreen videos. If you are good on camera, have something to teach, and/or can edit videos, this may be the passive income stream for you.

#15 Passive Income Ideas for 2022: Online Business

There are many online business ideas out there and in the future, this will become another post. But for a quick reference, here are some ideas I  have used or friends of mine have used to make money through an online business.

Flipping Blogs

Blogging can be an investment upfront, but often you will see experienced bloggers or websites wonder buying blogs because they have been around longer and have content. You see, the older your blog is, in Google’s eyes, the more trustworthy you become and the higher you can rank. Better ranking blogs earn more money. Therefore, people who start blogs and lose interest or don’t have the time to maintain them will sell them for a profit.

Shopify Store

Shopify is an easy way to sell things online. Shopify allows you to make a beautiful storefront and add products. Many people I know sell digital products in their stores. So once you make the product, you can continue earning money on it for years to come.

Ebooks

Creating an ebook is easy in a software tool such as Canva. You can sell your ebook on sites like Amazon KDP or your own blog if you have one.

If you have always wanted to write a book, now is the time to do it. It is easy to self-publish or sell your book yourself.

#16 Earn Passive Income While Shopping Online

These apps or websites will help you earn passive income while shopping in-store or online.

Rakuten

Rakuten is a sight that gives you a percentage back of the money you spend on an online shopping trip. So basically you are getting paid for something you were doing anyway. All you need to do is click through the site before shopping. It is a form of affiliate marketing where they give you a percent back of their affiliate marketing income.

Ibotta

To make this one truly passive, you will need to link your accounts. You just add the items you are going to buy and get rebates. If you don’t link your accounts you will need to snap a picture of the receipt, but I find linking an account is easier and saves you a step.

Fetch

Again, this one will need to be linked to make it passive, yet it is the same idea as Ibotta. You earn points for snapping pictures of your receipts or linking your accounts and earn points for shopping trips.

Related: Ibotta vs. Rakuten, Which is Better?

Receipt Hog

Again, receipt hog gives you points for receipts as does Fetch and Ibotta.

Shopkick

Earn kicks that can be redeemed for gift cards on the app for walking in a store. You can earn more by scanning things, but if you want this to be passive, you just walk into the store and make sure to open up the app. Pretty easy, if you were planning on grocery shopping.

You can also make money by referring these apps to family and friends. If you use my referral link or codes, I make a small amount of money, but I only recommend these because I use them myself.

#17 Sell on Amazon KDP for Passive Income

I recently started doing this and the little royalty checks are nice each week. It is actually pretty easy to create your own books in Canva. You can use the pro version to find more unique designs and pictures. You can also watch this video by Paul Marls. He got me started and I uploaded over 40 notebooks and journals as of today, but I am still working on getting a children’s book out and a meal planning book soon. Of course, this is a little work up front, but after your book is uploaded and approved, your income is very passive.

Passive income ideas for 2022

I hope you enjoyed these passive income ideas and you found something to help increase your income this year. The key is to find as many passive income streams as possible. They may require some initial setup, but once y our are done, you can earn while you sleep. One way to pay off debt is to find a side hustle and passive income is even more lucrative because you can set it and forget it if it is truly passive. Wishing you the best on your money journey.
