Tips to become successful in life

Do you want to be successful in life? If being a huge success is one of your goals it is best to find habits of successful people and copy those habits. Yet, often get in our own way.

Whether it be values we learned in childhood or repeating the same unproductive behavior patterns, there are ways to change and still become successful in life if you are willing to do the work.

Many successful people did not turn into huge successes overnight. They failed, got back up, worked hard and now they are crushing it.

One key component in your quest to becoming successful is to remember that your circumstances do not define you. YOU make you.

So in order to become more successful, you have to look inside yourself. You have to believe in yourself and you must -above all- stay positive. Don’t let your fear of being ordinary get in your way.

It is true, you can choose to look at things from any perspective you wish. But why not choose to look for the silver lining and be a “glass half full” type of person.

If you want to stay strong, you can’t sit around feeling sorry for yourself. You have to push through adversity and become the “you” you have always dreamed you would be.

Its true excuses will get in your way and you will feel uncomfortable for a while as you push out of your comfort zone.

Even if you want to talk yourself out of it and you can think of 50 reasons why you can’t be successful, you must push through your negative thoughts and make your life the life you have always dreamed of.

How to become successful in life and stop making excuses

Although it is easy to come up with a reason why you can’t get up out of bed early to kick-start your goals, this is your life and if you want to succeed, you must be able to stay focused and take steps to meet your goals. There are many reasons or excuses and important people in your life will even tell you, you can’t do this.

You can’t listen to the negative feedback. And you must learn to block it out. In fact, you must find anything in your life that stands in the way of your goal and cut it out.

Find positive people to surround yourself with and it will start to rub off on you. It is true, you ARE who you surround yourself with. If you hang around complainers, you will find yourself complaining more. Yet, if you are surrounded by goal-getters, you yourself will start setting more goals.

Keep in mind, I am not insinuating it will be easy to let go of toxic people. Feelings will be hurt. People will not understand.

Yet, it is your job to get YOU together and until you are able to do this, your life and goals will suffer. So please, put on your own oxygen mask first and start your path to success.

Many of the excuses listed below are in our heads daily. However, there are ways to get past your excuses and live the life you want.

11 Habits of Successful People You Can Copy

Success Habit #1: Find time

One excuse people make is they have no time. Yet, if you want to be successful in life you need to make time and prioritize.

You can’t just “hope” something will happen. If you sit and wait for the perfect opportunity to drop into your lap, unfortunately, you will be waiting a long time.

You must take action and create a plan.

First, decide what your long term goals are and work your way back to today. You can write out a five-year goal, then break it down into THIS year. Then break it down even further and plan out this month.

As Lao Tzu said, “every journey begins with one small step.” Start small, but start.

Take baby steps. Perhaps you have a savings goal and you want to save $10 per week and end up with a $520 emergency fund at the end of the year. Those small steps may not seem significant over the course of a week, but over time it adds up.

Maybe you are looking for a new career. Putting together a resume is not enough. You must actively pursue your dreams.

And you may be forced to take a job you think is beneath you; however, this could be the stepping stone to your future. If you show the company what you can do, you will most likely be promoted. So start your job search and set aside time each day to send out your resume, cold call or email companies you are interested in working for and be ready to accept something that isn’t necessarily your dream job.

The path to success may come in a different form than what you were anticipating; however, you must be open to taking a chance.

Also, be ready for rejection. Of the 100 emails you send, maybe ten people will answer. Yet, it only takes one of those people to say yes!

This small step could lead you on the path to success. So take action and make your plan today.

Success Habit #2: Find Ways to Deal With Overwhelm and Exhaustion

So this process may sound overwhelming and trust me, I get it. I feel overwhelmed ALL THE TIME. Then I take a sip of coffee, take a deep breathe and remind myself that “this too shall pass.”

In fact, I say this mantra often. It helps me cope. Find something that will help you get through the tough times and above all. learn to be grateful in all situations.

I then start small. For example, house clutter overwhelms me and I feel dead-stuck in my tracks when it comes to cleaning. Yet, I have found breaking this task into small sections helps me cope and get started. I start by setting a timer and making a commitment to declutter during those ten minutes. I then do nothing else but declutter. Most of the time I end up working over my ten minutes and cleaning more paper clutter than I planned.

So if you are feeling overwhelmed, try starting small. Even if it is setting aside ten minutes for specific tasks like exercise. You can be successful in your goals but taking baby steps.

It works. Give it a try.

Habit #3: Stop Negative thinking

Now you have a goal, but the negative thinking starts creeping in. Negative thinking is your brain’s way of protecting you.

Often fear gets the best of us and we use these negative excuses to create an anxiety that stops us – like a train-crossing backup – from doing something we will regret.

Yes, this may have been useful in the caveman days when we needed fear to keep us alive; however, this same fear and negativity can be crippling when it comes to becoming successful in life.

Sure it is easier to continue on a path that is familiar and we are used to, but if you are trying to become a huge success, this complacency will not direct you far.

Unfortunately, many people never accomplish what they were meant to do, because of fear. In terms of success, fear is the enemy.

So what do we do about this? We all have fears that stand in our way.

Try using positive affirmations to change your brain’s way of thinking. Use the 5-second rule as explained in Mel Robins book to help defeat the negative thoughts and push forward.

Check out the life-changing book here

This book is seriously LIFE-CHANGING and has helped me deal with my own anxiety. It is a MUST read if you are stuck in a rut and can’t seem to do the things you want to do to become successful.

Habit #4: Invest in yourself

Successful people are not afraid to invest in themselves. After watching Tony Robbin’s videos I learned he gave his last dollar away before he made his riches. He gave it to a boy so he could treat his mom to lunch. He decided to live his life feeling abundance, not scarcity. When we change our thinking to abundance, we realize, investing in ourselves is key to becoming successful.

Many people put themselves last and do not practice regular self-care. However, this way of thinking will only burden you.

At times, you will often feel like you do not deserve success. Yet, with the simple act of investing in yourself, you will begin to change this way of thinking and realize you deserve everything life has to offer, including success.

The key is to “not” talk yourself out of your success plans. Perhaps you want to start an online business, but the class you need costs $500 so you give up and talk yourself out of it before you even begin. You may consider this too much of an investment and try to do things on your own.

Yet, how will you ever know how successful you could have been if you do not put yourself out there or even try. That $500 is a small investment if you consider how much you could make if you are well-trained and are able to generate money from your business.

Take the chance and apply for that job you may only be 60% qualified for and learn the rest as you go.

Give yourself the gift of education. Check out as many free books from the library and use your free time, not to watch television, but to read on the subject you are interested in conquering.

By the way,  the average person watches almost three hours of television per day. Just think how productive you could be if you turned off the tube. And don’t get me started on social media, Youtube, and the Internet. There are WAY more productive things you could be doing.

Success Habit #5: Become a Doer

Yes, successful people are not just thinkers, but also doers. They find ways to take action instead of letting their dreams slip by.

Have you heard of the five-second rule as mentioned above? A simple trick created by Mel Robins -by the way check out her TED talks, life-changing!

Using this rule, you count down from five to one like a rocket blasting off. Use this trick any time you feel like making excuses and talking yourself out of something.

Mel suggests waking up early to accomplish your goals. The problem is most people hit snooze and talk themselves out of the most productive ideas before they even start.

The ah-ha moment for me was that you will never feel like doing the challenging stuff in life. Your “lizard” brain will talk you out of it because of fear.

So use the five-second rule the next time you decide you aren’t going to do what you made a commitment to yourself to do. Seriously, we keep our commitments to other people. Why don’t we think enough of ourselves to keep our own goals and commitments? Count backward from five and do it!

Success Habit #6: Form Better Habits and Morning Routines

Many successful people get up early and start their day the same with a productive morning routine. Many of these morning routines include exercise, reading, breathing, meditating, and eating nourishing foods.

If you don’t feel like getting up at five in the morning to start your day early and achieve your dreams, think again. There will never be a good time for you to start.

You can make excuses about what is going on in your life at this moment; however, if you into the future, and five years from now you will be just as busy with something else.

Yes, you are a busy person, but we all get the same 24 hours. What will you do with yours? Of course, we all need 7-8 hours of sleep to be productive, so that leaves you will 16-17 hours to work on your successes.

  • What can you do today to take action?
  • Can you watch free training?
  • Can you set aside 30 minutes to go to the library and grab some business books?
  • Can you take your kids to the park and let them play while you read, write, or brainstorm?

There is always a way, but sometime you must be creative. Another blogger friend of mine writes her post while sitting at her son and daughter’s sports classes.

Start your day off write. Create a schedule and take action today!

Success Habit #7: Put Yourself First

Becoming a huge success is scary. In order to take yourself to the next level, you are going to have to push yourself out of your comfort zone. However, it is easy to make excuses as to why you can’t take the next step. Honestly, you will never feel like doing the hard work so you must make success a priority.

You cannot continue to do the same things in life and expect different results. So if you are used to putting everyone and everything else first instead of your needs and priorities, you need to find time for your dreams and goals.

Is it possible to set aside three-four hours per week where your spouse can watch the kids and you can head to a coffee shop to work on your business? Maybe you want to write a book, but you also have twenty other things going on that seem more important. If you do not make your book a number one priority, it will never happen.

You need to sit down and write out your goals. Then write down your other responsibilities. Is there something you can outsource like cleaning your house?

Enlist the help of your family and assign jobs or if you have the money to hire a housekeeper. (I realize not everyone can afford a housekeeper, so creating a strict cleaning schedule or just letting some things go may be your only option.)

Can your mom watch the kids for free for a few hours per week so you can work on your goals?

Putting yourself first is difficult, but after you take the time it will become a habit.

Success Habit #8: Take Action

Nothing will happen unless you take action. According to the American Time Use Survey study done by the Beuro of Labor Statistics, the average person age 15 and up watches around 2 hours and 49 minutes of television per day. Of course, that amount varied by age and weekdays versus weekends, but the time is clear. That is almost three hours per day, you could be working towards your dream.  Even just cutting back an hour could be life-changing and promote your success. After you have a plan of action, make yourself to two or three things on your list every day.

Again, every journey begins with one small step. So take that first step,

It may seem like these small steps are getting you nowhere, yet, these small goals are taking you one step closer to your dream life. Let’s put down the remote and take out a notepad. Start writing down your dreams and goals. List how you will achieve them. Start today!

People can talk all day about what they want to do with their lives. However, talk is talk. Nothing is going to change in your life unless you begin. Just start. Do it now. Do not waste another second.

Success Habit #9: Study Other People’s Success

You will never know how to do everything. But after you decide to start, learning is an integral part of success. Many CEO’s read daily. Regardless of how much time you have, you can find a way to fit it in. Even if you are low on cash, you can find many success books at the library. Here are a few I read recently and recommend:

  • Zero to One – Peter Theil
  • Girl, Stop Apologizing – Rachel Hollis
  • People Skill in Business – Allen Fox
  • The Power of Habit –
  • Purple Cow – Seth Godin

There are so many more. Just google success books and you will find piles upon piles of books and/or blog posts to get you started.

Pay attention to these success stories. What did they do differently than what you are doing?

Try reading for just 15 minutes per day. Set a timer if you have to. Read while you are waiting to pick up your kids or for appointments. Instead of reading the latest fashion magazine, read about success and personal development.

I set a goal to read at least 20 pages per day of my business and personal development books.

Continue to better yourself daily and you will get there. The mountain may seem high, but if others have done it, so can you!

After I ran a nine-mile race for the first time, I treated myself to pizza. Let me tell you, that pizza never tasted so good! Your celebrations can be small but celebrate your success. You deserve it.

Success Habit #10: Fail and Get Back Up

Successful people fail.

Fail, fail, and fail again!

One secret to success if failure. You will never succeed unless you are willing to fail.

However, after you fail do not dwell on the failure and give up. Stand up, admit you were wrong and find a way to change. Learn more and use your knowledge to do better the next time.

Did you know Ben Franklin tried over 1000 times before finding the right materials to invent the light bulb? What if he would have given up after ten tries?

Success Habit #11: Celebrate

When I got married, we had to attend Catholic marriage counseling and a few seminars. During one point, they discussed finances. Their recommendations were to spend 10% of your wages on celebrating.

Of course, you don’t have to spend 10% of your income on celebrating, but do something to celebrate your small successes along the way.

Don’t forget to celebrate your success. Set small goals for yourself and celebrate as you achieve them. Maybe you are working toward earning $1000 per month. Make a point to go out to a nice meal after you hit that milestone.

Save a fancy bottle of wine and open it when you hit your next goal.

It doesn’t have to be anything big. For example, buy yourself a nice bottle of lotion after hitting your running goal.
