Money Quote - Thomas Edison
Money Quote – Thomas Edison

I am back today with another money quote and this one by Thomas Edison is a good one! There are so many opportunities in today’s world and there are more ways to make money than ever before. We are in the age of technology and the Internet. Hence, the opportunities are endless. We often hear people talk about their “Side Hustle” and how they work so hard to get ahead.  However, there are the people out there that miss out on these opportunities because they are afraid of pulling up their overalls for a hard day’s work.

Did you know in the United States alone there are $10.8 millionaires (CNBC.com article)? This number struck me as HUGE but the most interesting part is that many of these millionaires are self-made. No, they did not grow up with money, my friends. They got out of bed every morning and hustled! They found opportunities to create wealth and did not give up. Many millionaires failed over and over! But the difference between the millionaire mindset and the average Joe is perseverance and learning from failure.  Just look at Bill Gates. He started out with nothing and became one of the richest men in the world. There is something to be said for the self-made millionaire and work ethic!

Opportunity, Wisdom, and Respect

I guess the lesson we can take from Thomas Edison’s wisdom is to learn the value of hard work. My Dad was a hard-working man and for this, I give him much respect. He would work the midnight shift and pick up overtime when he got the chance, to keep our family afloat and allow us to take a vacation a few times a year. We were by no means rich, but we had enough because my Dad did what he had to do. Likewise, my husband is a dedicated worker. He works overtime once or twice a week, working sixteen-hour shifts to provide for our family while I continue to be a stay-at-home mom to our two boys. I respect them both for their sacrifices.

My Dad is a man of many quotes! I remember him telling me as a child “nothing comes easy” and “the early bird catches the worm.” He always tried to instill the value of hard work in his four kids! He wanted us to know we needed to work hard in order to succeed and to get up early to stay ahead of the game.

An important lesson to teach your kids is work ethic. Install the value of effort and you and your children will go far. No one ever became rich sitting around watching tv for five hours a day. Did you know the average millionaire only watches tv for around an hour a day, if at all? If you want to grow your wealth, you have to start thinking like a millionaire and even if you have developed other habits, it is never too late to change.

Under Cover Boss

One evening I was watching the show Under Cover Boss. In this show, the CEO of a business goes undercover in order to see how things are running. Often employees that aren’t doing their job or are rude to customers are fired and the hard-working employees are rewarded with a raise or promoation. In one episode, I remember a disabled man who continued to do manual labor for his company. Although he had back problems and working was difficult for him he continued to perform his job duties well. Also, something he said really stuck with me. He told the viewers as long as he was able to work and be productive, he would continue to do so. This man’s positive attitude stayed with me for many years – I’m not even sure it is still on unless you catch a rerun…However, this man can teach us all a lesson. If we are able to be productive and work hard, why shy away from an opportunity?

Get Smart

In a book I just finished reading, Get Smart!: How to Think and Act Like the Most Successful and Highest-Paid People in Every Field by Brian Tracey, Brian explains how to have a successful mindset. Nonetheless, Brian is a successful businessman that has built an empire after working as a door-to-door sales person. He now mentors people about staying productive at work and getting ahead. In his book, he discusses the importance of mindset. He says you should think like a millionaire and develop millionaire habits if you want to be financially independent. He advises writing down goals, getting up early, and using your energy for healthy habits such as exercise and work. This book is a MUST read for anyone looking to improve their business skills and become more productive as an entrepreneur or worker.

In Conclusion…

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work”. – Thomas Edison

Let’s all remember Thomas Edison’s contributions and get up tomorrow with new habits. Start your journey to success and financial freedom by developing a strong work ethic and using ALL the opportunities life gives you to get ahead and better yourself. Every day you wake up a new opportunity lies ahead to do better than you did the day before!
