#1 Make investing and saving automatic

One way to stop feeling broke is to start saving money automatically. If you are lucky enough to have a job with a 403b or 401k option, take advantage. It is rare to find these options today, but depending on your field, they still exist.

All you need to do is contact your human resources department at work and they will help you set up your contributions. The money is taken out before taxes so you will not miss much, and you will already have money set aside before you are paid.

If you are not fortunate enough to have one of these options, you can still set up accounts with your bank and have money set aside when you are paid. In doing this, you do not have to worry about how much you are saving and you can then feel free to spend what is left after bills.

You can also set up a ROTH IRA and start saving for retirement.

If you are young and still in your 20’s, start investing now. You can take advantage of compound interest as other savvy women investors have. If you want to be a boss with your money and stop being broke, use investing to make money.

If investing sounds like a foreign concept to you and you feel it is super intimidating, no worries! You can use this easy tool called Acorns to invest your spare change. It is an app so it is super easy to set up and you will not be taking a huge risk, as you are only investing change. The Acorns app will get you started and you can then take your investing to the next level and try investing in a socially conscious platform such as this one.

#2 Sinking funds

Have you heard of sinking funds? Sinking funds are accounts set up for specific purposes. Learning how to use sinking funds, can literally trick your brain into saving. Research shows if you set money aside in a separate account,  you have to make more than one decision/action to take the money out. Therefore, you are less likely to spend that money.

Some ideas for sinking funds are as follows:

  • wedding fund
  • vacation fund
  • down payment fund
  • Christmas gift fund
  • emergency fund

These are some ideas, but certainly, you are not limited to the above mentioned. If you have something you really want, set up a sinking fund to save up for it. Check with your bank to set up sinking funds for you. You can also have money automatically transferred on payday.

If you choose an online bank, you can set up these accounts yourself. One bank I recommended is CIT bank. These have above-average interest rates and help you earn money on your savings. Check out CIT Bank rates here.

#4 Live below your means

If you want to emulate women who are never broke, living below your means is key. One easy way to live below your means is to practice frugal living.

If you are not used to saving money, you can start small and keep track of where you spend money for at least two weeks. Then use that as a starting point for your budget and take a look at where you can cut spending and save more. If you learn to live frugally, you can save more and stop being broke.

#5 Meal Plan

Women who are never broke use meal planning to keep their grocery bills low. It is easy to order take out or stop on your way home, to grab fast food, when you don’t know what is for dinner. But if you try meal planning, you will know what is for dinner and avoid these pricey temptations. If you write out your meal plan before your grocery shopping, you can make a grocery list around your meal plan. In this way, you will have all of your dinner ingredients and will eliminate the need to run out to the store.

Even if you treat yourself with some pricier recipes, chances are you will still be paying less than what you would spend ordering take out for a family. Start saving money today by using meal planning.
