Frugal Living Fails and Frugal Living Mistakes – Learn from me!!

Frugal Fails & Frugal Finds
Frugal Fails & Frugal Finds

Money fails and finds…We’ve all had them.  There are the times when we wanted to save an extra buck or two but ended up spending an outrageous amount. Saving money isn’t always fun. At times, it is down-right difficult.  Not to mention, spending money is more fun, right! I’m with you! However, sticking to a budget, when you are clearly not rich, will help you live a stress-free, happier life.

On the contrary, it is amazing to find money. For example, think of the day you put $10 in your pocket and then put those pants away for the winter. Spring cleaning rolls around and you are $10 richer! Finding extra money is the best feeling.

Yet, coming into money shouldn’t be so arbitrary.  Finding concrete ways to save money will help you in the long-run. (Check out my Budgets 2017 – New Year, New Budget Post for help on this.)

Sharing Our Stories

Today I’m going to share some examples of times I failed at saving money.  Although these were money mistakes, these failures led me to growth.  Hence, a money mistake is never truly a mistake if you learn from it.

Say Goodbye to Impulse Buys – Save Money

We often hear people talk about  “needs” versus “wants” and the impulse to spend? However, for the average impulse spender, this may sound like a foreign idea. If we want it, we need it, right? Impulse buys are one major way to throw off your budget.  Nonetheless, being able to have impulse control over spending could really save you money.

Why Should I Stop Spending Freely?

You may be asking, why would I want to do this? I like shopping! I love treating myself and I love the thrill of spending!

Yet, do you ever have that feeling of emptiness after you bought an expensive item you didn’t need? Have you ever bought something to make yourself feel better? Well this post is for you (and let’s face it 90% of us have-including myself!) Retail therapy used to be my stressor’s best friend.

What is a need?

There are the basics. For example, we need food, water, clothing, and shelter. Additionally, paying your mortgage/rent and utilities are big needs. If you have children you will need diapers and baby food. Additionally, we all have transportation costs. In fact, needs vary from person to person. Therefore, prioritize what you really need. Then if you have money left, buy your want! (That’s after saving too.)

Epic Goal Setting and Productivity – Free Goal Setting Printable

Failing to plan, is planning to fail. – Benjamin Franklin

Goal setting… A way to reach for your dreams. As a former teacher part of my job was to teach kids to believe in themselves and I enjoyed teaching how to set goals and stick to them.  It’s true, many of us have a clear vision of where we want our lives to be. Yet, finding the next step on that path can prove to be difficult. Although research shows many New Year’s goals go to the wayside by February, studies also show people who write down their goals are more likely to achieve them.

Opening up Christmas cards is the start of the Holiday Season for most! Pretty glitter, cute pictures, Holiday scenes…It is no wonder we rip open the envelope immediately upon receipt.

Nonetheless, I was raised not waste.  I often wonder what other people do with the cute pictures I spent tons of time on. You know, all the fun of picking out cute outfits, getting pictures, typing or writing address labels. Not to mention, these sweet little well wishes cost money?

Don’t get me wrong. I love this thoughtful tradition as much as the next. With that being said, I have to admit, I have a hard time throwing away Christmas cards. It could be my sentimental side… People took time out of their busy lives to send me and my family a special Holiday note. What a great way to say you care.
