Learn How to Be Happy Getting Rid of Stuff

What I Learned after selling 65 Items out of my closet and getting rid of “stuff”…

Learn how to be happier by getting rid of stuff

Have you ever considered what clutter does to your brain? Research shows clutter has a negative effect and more so on women. It makes us ladies feel unfocused and out of control when clutter starts to take over. It is difficult to feel content in an ever so cluttered environment.

Yet, many of us do not want to let go of our accumulated messes because our stuff holds value and sentiment. According to the Journal of Consumer Psychology, we see our stuff as part of us which explains why it can be so hard to clean out those baby toys or clothes you once looked so fab in.

A study from the January Issue of The Journal of Neuroscience from The Princeton Neuroscience Institute states, “Multiple stimuli present in the visual field at the same time compete for neural representation by mutually suppressing their evoked activity throughout visual cortex, providing a neural correlate for the limited processing capacity of the visual system.” In everyday terms, the more stuff and clutter you have in your home, the more stressed out and less productive you will be. Your clutter will always be competing for your attention, and that precious time could be so well spent elsewhere (like with your kids), which leads me to why I am writing this post.

Did anyone used to watch the show “Hoarders”? The story-line involved people who could not let go of accumulated stuff and their houses were eventually overtaken by knick-knacks and other sentimental treasures.  Experts would swoop in and try to convince the poor souls to let go of items to improve their living conditions.  I’m not even sure it is still on, but let’s face it, we all have a bit of that sentimental hoarding-side that makes us clutter-happy. (Useful Tips for Decluttering Your Home and Gaining Perspective).

Why Is It So Hard to Let Go of Clutter?

The definition of a hoarder is “a person who hoards things.” (Google definitions) So true, it is easy to have obsessiveness with certain items. Mostly, we hold on to stuff that evokes emotion and conjures up memories and/or nostalgic feelings.

Nonetheless, fear is triggered when parting with our items. We have a fear of regret. We are anxious about forgetting our dearest memories. Of course, we do not want to let go of these wonderful items.

Need a little extra cash? Need to clean out your closet?  Then this is the website for you.

I was in a dilemma after having my two boys. Unfortunately, I had many items in my closet that I stilled loved but they did not fit me. Yet, I continued to hope I would go back to my pre-pregnancy body and held on to my beloved clothes!

After all, I used to be a teacher and enjoyed my dressy work clothes, planning my outfits each week and feeling great when I stepped out the door.  These clothes were part of me! And I wanted to keep them!

However, after a few years of holding on to these, some almost new items, I read about an app called Poshmark in a magazine. I decided to clean out my cluttered closet and give it a try.

I’m happy to say that after being on the website for about six months, I have already made around $400.

All you need is a good picture of your item to upload it with the information (size, condition, description, price) and you are good to go.  Also, It helps to style your item or give your buyers an idea of how to style the item in the description. You are selling a lifestyle!!

Follow as many people as you can and most will return the favor and follow you.  The more followers you have, the more people will see your items.

Also, share your items often. They will then come up on your follower’s news feeds and other people (hopefully with more followers) will share your items. All of this is really easy within the website. (more…)
