7 Fun and Quirky Things to Save Money

#1 Get married to someone frugal

Want to save money? Marry someone frugal. This is a sure bet to save.

Sure, they may not be the most fun partner telling you not to spend frivolously, but you will have fun when you enjoy your early retirement because of all of the money you saved.

So if you are single, pay attention to your potential mates spending patterns. Do they use coupons and budget or are they frivolous when it comes to money. If you are frivolous too, financially you may not make the best pair.

Yet, if he or she likes to save money and is already saving for retirement, they may be your new frugal fiance!

#2 Invest your spare change

Investing is super easy nowadays. All you have to do is sign up for an easy Robo-investor.

In fact, it is even easier to invest your spare changes using an app such as Acorn.

With Acorn, you link your credit card to the app and each time you make a purchase it is rounded up to the nearest dollar and the spare change is invested, just like you would throw your spare change in a coin jar. Only this spare change is now making you money! Cha-ching!

You can sign up for Acorn here and give it a try. Why not earn money on your spare change?

#3 Take a cruise on trash day

This may not be for all, but people throw away some really great stuff. Why? Because they bought something new and don’t know what to do with their old stuff.

The best part is, you can actually pick up people’s trash and flip it on online selling platforms such as Facebook Groups or eBay. Of course, I’m not really into digging through other people’s trash bags, but if there are items such as a table, chairs, kids toy, stroller, etc. that are still in good shape, consider grabbing them and selling them on a Facebook group for extra cash or keeping to fix up for your own house.

I also belong to a freecycle group on Facebook where people will list items they no longer want but don’t want to deal with selling. Sometimes you will find bags of clothing you could sell on sites such as Poshmark (get a $5 coupon by signing up with my code MasMax) or ThredUp. Other times you find kids toys which are great for your own kids or selling platforms such as Mercari or Facebook.

Be sure to check for freecycle groups in your area. On a side note, these groups are excellent at helping reduce our carbon footprint because we are not throwing all of our old stuff into landfills.

#4 Unplug everything you aren’t using

Want to become a super-saver? Learn to unplug your electronics that are not in use and save on your electricity bill. This is especially important if you are going out-of-town for a week or so.

You will see your bill drop when you unplug during the time you are away.

For day-to-day, you can still save a little by unplugging your Keurig, toaster, television, curling iron, charger, and lamps while not in use or at work.

#5 Move into a tiny home

Want to save, but still live? Consider moving into a tiny house.

Tiny houses cost way less than a regular single-family house so if you can stand not having a spacious castle of your own, then a tiny house will do.

Consider the fact that you can save on your mortgage and pay your house off early.

Not to mention, if you are outdoorsy this is a great option. You can put your tiny house on open land and enjoy nature instead of being inside all day.

You will have tons of extra spending money to travel or build a really cool outdoor space to enjoy by your tiny home.

#6 Order from the dollar menu

If you want to save on food, but you are not super thrilled with meal planning and cooking, try ordering from the dollar menu. Most fast food places have items for only a buck.

Here are some great dollar menu choices:

  • McChicken from McDonald’s
  • Cheeseburger from McDonald’s
  • Crunchy taco from Taco Bell
  • Burgers from Wendy’s

Although not the healthiest, if you plan to eat out at least once per week, you can do so for under $5 per family.

Another healthier option that my kids and I love is $5 foot long from  Subway. I usually order this when my husband works late and I have been with the kids all day. They split one side and I eat the other! YUM!

#7 Save your condiments from restaurant

Sick of buying ketchup, taco sauce, sweet and sour sauce and the like? Then try saving your condiments from restaurants. After ordering taco bell ask for extra sauce and use it on your nachos or tacos at home. We always end up with extra sweet and sour sauce when my kids order chicken nuggets and we save it and use it on our chicken nuggets at home. It reduces waste and saves food so why not?
